The most sought-after training providers in New Jersey are all training companies that specialize in teaching people how to do what they do best, such as driving and other jobs that require precise coordination and communication, according to a new report from the nonprofit organization Training Industry Analysts.
The New Jersey Department of Transportation’s Transportation Safety Administration (TSSA) is reviewing training programs that include teaching people to drive safely, said Liz O’Neill, the director of the agency’s safety program.
The agency has identified five companies that train people in driving, including one that trains people to ride buses, a second that trains drivers and a third that trains paramedics.
The top four companies are all in New York City, where Transportation Secretary Polly Trottenberg, a former state legislator, has visited since 2013.
She was not available for comment Monday.
A third of the programs in the report are in New England.
New Jersey is home to one of the busiest states for people to learn how to drive.
The state also has a large number of training centers that are run by companies that provide driving instruction.
The other top five companies are: The Motor Vehicle Safety Foundation of New Jersey, Inc., which has about 15 training centers; the National Motor Vehicle Association, which has 20 training centers across the country; the Safety Education Corporation, which is based in Florida; and the Institute of Transport Engineers, which offers training in the field of engineering and related disciplines.
In New Jersey alone, there are more than 5,300 licensed commercial drivers, and there are about 10,000 licensed emergency medical technicians, according the TIAA-CREF report.
Training companies that offer driving instruction are also among the top employers in New Hampshire, where the state’s unemployment rate is nearly 12 percent, according a TIAC-CRE report.
The most expensive training program in the state is a company that trains law enforcement officers, said Mark McGovern, a transportation analyst at the Institute for Public Policy Research, a nonprofit organization that tracks and analyzes the training industry.
That company is also a top employer in New Mexico, where its unemployment rate stands at 5.4 percent.
The report did not provide data on the cost of driver training.
The TIAAA-CRA report did.
The TIAAC report said that while the number of people learning to drive is increasing across the U.S., the number training in driving is increasing at a slower pace, which could have implications for public safety.
The training companies, the TIOA-A, the UTA and the Transportation Safety Foundation are the main players in driving training in New Brunswick, N.J., which is home in part to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which oversees the training program.
A TIOAA-A spokeswoman said Monday that the organization had not yet responded to a request for comment.
A spokeswoman for the New Jersey State Police said she could not comment on specific training programs but said that the training programs for law enforcement and fire and rescue personnel are funded by state funds.
The program also helps the state to better understand how the public works.
